ADU Requirements
What is an ADU?
An ADU / DADU (or accessory dwelling unit), can also be known as a backyard cottage, accessory apartment, carriage house, mother-in-law suite, or granny flat. Whatever term you use, this type of smaller home is usually an additional living space located on the same piece of property as an existing home. While it can also be a new home on an existing plot of land by itself, in order to be classified as an ADU, it must be self-sufficient – the living space must include areas for living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation.
Many counties and cities have their own “codes” as to what is truly an ADU. Since some municipalities might require that the ADU and existing home match, our in-house design team can modify any of our ADU home plans for you. You will want to verify all laws and codes yourself, but we have put together some ADU requirements for specific municipalities. Note: Area requirements may change.

Benefits of ADUs
Increase Your Home Value
Building an ADU can increase your overall property value. Regardless of the type you choose to invest in, rest assured that buyers will appreciate the newly renovated additional space.
Extra Space
ADUs are ideal for those with large families, frequent visitors, or multi-generational households, providing additional space for hosting. Your guests will no longer have to stay cramped in one bedroom with limited access to amenities.
Increased Privacy
The ability to host guests without them interfering with your day-to-day life is invaluable. ADUs provide you with extra space to accommodate guests and visitors for a lengthy stay without infringing upon your privacy. Additionally, they offer supplementary space for your personal needs.
Rental Income
Consider an ADU as a smart investment if you wish to host a bed and breakfast or welcome visitors through Airbnb, VRBO, and other online platforms. This allows you to generate rental income while ensuring the privacy and security of your own home.
